1. Plan your itinerary. With a wealth of tools available on the internet, planning your route and stops to make along the way is easier than ever. Travel apps like Yelp and TripAdvisor can alert you to “must try” dining option and attractions
2. Snacks – All good road trips need tasty snacks and beverages. Not only do you save money by packing your own, but having treats in the car rules out at least a few unnecessary stops. Go for variety of easy to eat and pack options – like crackers, cookies, fruit roll ups, jerky, and cut up veggies and fruit. Pack a cooler with your favorite beverages,
3. A spare set of keys and roadside assistance information – Just in case! Keep a spare set of keys with a responsible fellow traveler, because getting locked out of your vehicle would certainly put a damper on your excursion. And if you should find yourself stranded with a flat tire or out of gas, the price you pay for a roadside assistance membership is worth it’s weight in gold!
4. Entertainment (and headphones!) Family time is great and all, but when the conversation starts to lag, or the kids get a bit antsy, having games, movies and music available will be your best bet. Headphones are a must to reduce the cacophony of noises you’re bound to endure. Pack a pair for everyone (except the driver, of course!) And don’t forget to pack chargers with auto adapters! A bored kid with an unpowered device is not what you want on a roadtrip!
5. Toiletries – Pack some tissues, hand lotion, cough drops, allergy meds, pain relievers, and a basic first aid kit to help with passenger discomfort when necessary.
6. Pillows and Throw Blankets – Not only will these make the trip more comfortable, they can also be used in the back seat to designate personal space. And nothing is better in an unfamiliar bed then your own pillow!
7. Cleaning Supplies - Keep the vehicle organized and tidy with a few plastic shopping bags to use as trash bags, a roll of paper towels, some moist wipes, and my personal requirement for car trips of any length, Febreze Car Vent Clips. These amazing little devices eliminate tough car odors for up to 30 days and let you ride in freshness.
Here’s a pro tip – add a 2nd Febreze Car Vent Clip to the passenger vent in the backseat. Perfect when kids people get too comfortable and take off smelly shoes and other unpleasant aromas that might arise
