Ugghh.. ABC News is reporting that:

“Safeway has agreed to be acquired by an investment group led by Cerberus Capital Management, the owner several supermarket chains.

The acquisition is worth about $7.64 billion in cash, and pending other transactions could top more than $9 billion.

The deal, announced late Thursday, will bring together Safeway and Albertsons. Cerberus last year had bought the Albertsons stores it didn’t already own from Supvalu Inc., along with four other Supervalu chains. The company has more than 1,300 U.S. locations under banners including Safeway, Vons, Pavilion’s, Randall’s, Tom Thumb and Carrs.” ABC News

I wish I was the type to easily embrace change, but I can’t say that’s part of my genetic makeup…

I’m just hoping that I’ll still be able to shop at my favorite Vons and that they will keep the Just4U program and $5 Fridays. I would hate for Vons to move towards Albertsons promotional methods which are typically some in-ad coupons and game pieces where I can win 2 more game pieces. Please…

It’s likely that under-performing locations and stores that are in close proximity to one another will shut down. And that is bad news for all consumers, because that means less competition in the grocery space.

In Southern California that will leave us with the new Albertsons/Vons, Ralphs, Stater Bros, Target and Walmart as the big players.
